Cazul 101 and Ivan Gallery are delighted to invite you on Wednesday, September 08, starting 7 pm, to the opening event of the group show “The Current Affair of Some Young Romanian Artists”, on the 1st floor of Atelierele Malmaison.

The exhibition presents recent approaches and practices in Romanian contemporary art, selected by the curator Robert Băjenaru of Cazul 101. The 17 artists are born in different stages of the ‘80s and ‘90s and share an experimental, personal, researched-based attitude towards art-making, most often developed in inter or trans-media works, mixtures of traditional as well as new, digital means varying from case to case.

Without aiming at showcasing an X-ray through a certain generation of young artists or graduates of art schools, the exhibition makes visible artistic gestures and stances relevant at present for the diversity of directions in contemporary art, at home as well as internationally – some of artists living and working abroad. Among the objective criteria of selection were counted the visibility of the artists, their exhibition history – especially the frequency of solo-shows – because the main aim of the exhibition is to bring forth and support practices at the beginning of their artistic path, less seen or insufficiently known at the level of local and (inter)national art scenes.

The exhibition is conceived through the collaboration between two entities with different profiles and histories – Cazul 101, project space, and Ivan Gallery, private gallery – that share bonds and a close vicinity inside the extended artistic ecosystem of the Atelierele Malmaison (Malmaison Studios) community.

Cazul 101 is a multidisciplinary art space opened in February 2018 in Bucharest with the aim of exhibiting, supporting and promoting national and international emergent artists. This initiative has taken shape in the precarious context of exhibiting spaces and opportunities accessible to young Romanian artists. The project has been active in many spaces, among which a house and a garage in the Cotroceni neighbourhood, always in an independent, self-supported and self-financed manner. On August 10 2020, Cazul 101 launched an extension titled Another Mobile Gallery (AMG), a dynamic entity conceived as an alternative to the usual contemporary art gallery. Starting as a van, AMG is not necessarily linked to a physical space, but goes forward with the main purpose of organising pop-up art exhibitions that can take place anywhere in the world.

Ivan Gallery is a private contemporary art gallery opened in Bucharest in 2007, with a program focusing both on local and international artists, either established, such as Geta Brătescu, Ion Grigorescu, Paul Neagu, or Lia Perjovschi, either from the younger generation, among whom Silvia Amancei & Bogdan Armanu, Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Cristina David, Ștefan Sava, and Iulia Toma. The gallery also collaborates with Romanian artists living abroad, such as Bartha Sandor and Mădălina Zaharia, as well as with the foreign artists Elijah Burgher, Ross Taylor and Jaro Varga. Ivan Gallery has acquired 15 years of experience in organising exhibitions, in participating to international art fairs, and in collaborating with various contemporary art institutions in regards to the represented artists’ participation in landmark national and international exhibitions, such as Vienna Biennale, Art Encounters Biennial Timișoara, Documenta 14, The Romanian Pavilion in the 2017 Venice Biennale, Europalia Romania 2019, etc.

The exhibition can be visited in Cazul 101 and Ivan Gallery’s spaces inside Atelierele Malmaison on Calea Plevnei 137C, B side, 1st floor, until October 09 2021, Wed-Sat 2-6 pm, or by appointment outside the visiting hours. Due to the context generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the gallery visit will be according to the rules established by the Ministerial Order applicable at the time of the visit.

Throughout the exhibition, students, young artists, curators, art critics, or other interested persons will be invited to participate in professional mentorship workshops held by the artists Mădălina Zaharia, Florin Tudor, and Ștefan Sava. The respective dates will be announced at a subsequent time.
