Guide Me

Cristina David & Ivana Pegan Baće

19.07–14.09.2019

We are delighted to invite you on Friday, July 19, starting 7 pm, to the opening of our Summer exhibition, “Guide Me”, a collaborative project of the artists Cristina David (RO) and Ivana Pegan Baće (HR).

In 2018 Cristina David participated in an artistic residency at Galerija Flora (Flora Gallery) in Dubrovnik, Croatia, an art centre supported by public funds and coordinated by Ivana Pegan Baće. During the time spent there, Cristina David developed a project concerning objective and subjective distances. Starting from an idea brainstormed together with curator and art historian Alina Șerban, “387491 cm” took shape as an intervention of 124 paper notes glued and inserted in the public space in Dubrovnik, each note announcing the length in centimetres between there and Galerija Flora. The hand-stamped notes were marks promoting an artistic space, in an attempt to bring awareness and visibility to a cultural site not sufficiently known and visited by tourists nor the local public. In a parallel endeavour, Cristina David created an ongoing personal inventory of straight line distances in centimetres between Galerija Flora and important places in her life, thus bringing together different spaces of memory and experience.

“67400001 cm” is the shortest distance between Ivan Gallery in Bucharest and Flora Gallery in Dubrovnik. In this case, Cristina David has switched parts and invited Ivana Pegan Baće, an artist herself, to show in Bucharest some of her recent works – artist books, poetry objects, audio and video pieces. Pegan Baće uses language, speech and voice in her multimedia artistic projects. Through diaries, fragmentary texts, poetry, short stories and grammar pinnings, as well as through works which focus on spoken words,  she analyses the ways in which the subject is constituted by focusing on the emotional, mental and vocal potential of overcoming social conventions and established borders. The two artists have previously met in 2017 while they were both artists-in-residence at Q21/MuseumsQuartier in Vienna.
